The Rosevear Tea brand has been created by Isabelle and Adam Rosevear. Isabelle is from the French island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean and Adam’s roots are in Cornwall. They met as students in Edinburgh in the 1990s.
“We are both passionate about tea. From the time we were students in Edinburgh, we have always liked a good cup of tea. We have visited and lived in many countries where tea is the ultimate symbol of hospitality. Yet it is drunk in different ways each time, whether with a slice of lemon in Russia, through a cube of sugar tucked between your lips in Azerbaijan, or with mint in North Africa… and in different rituals, either poured 2 or 3 feet high from a silver brass teapot in Morocco or from a bowl held in both hands in South Korea. Each way being as pleasant as the other and connecting people around this delicious warming beverage.
On returning to Edinburgh, we felt we could bring something to our community by offering the opportunity to share our passion of quality loose teas.
We opened our first store on Bruntsfield Place in 2015 and as more people started to use loose leaf tea, sales grew. Discovering leaf tea is a journey, and we love accompanying our customers on this fascinating voyage.
While we were closed for a refurbishment after Christmas 2015, a customer asked us if she could ‘refill’ her tea container rather than buy a new pouch. What a good idea! Re-using containers is so much better for the planet than recycling them. We soon adopted our refill policy whereby customers could bring their own containers to be refilled. We decided to encourage this ‘environmental gesture’ by giving a 50p discount on the price of a tea bought this way. Our refill policy was born.
As much as we have been in the shops a great deal over the last five years, it has often been our friendly and energetic colleagues who have represented Rosevear Tea. We are so grateful to them all. They, like us, get their energy from the wonderful interaction with our customers and this has fed our drive to grow our business.
We opened a second shop on Broughton Street in 2016. By that time the number of teas that we stocked had risen to around 50 from the 9 that we had started with in Bruntsfield. In early 2018, our friends the owners of ‘Anteaques’ invited us to take on their Clerk Street store, and we are so pleased that we did.
It has been a wonderfully exciting few years of discovery, going on tea buying expeditions around the world to find new teas and holding innovative tea tasting and pairing events in Edinburgh (like our tea and cheese pairing events).
As we write in May 2020, it is a time of uncertainty and change but we will always endeavour to share your tea ‘journey’ with you by meeting you in our stores or online and by supplying you the very best teas that we can find for you.”
